University of Moratuwa has won Manamperi Award 2010, which is awarded for&#xD;
the best inter-university final year undergraduate project in Engineering&#xD;
by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), for&#xD;
their research project on Co-channel interference mitigation in Long Term&#xD;

Chief Guest for the occasion was the Vice Chancellor of the University &#xD;
of Moratuwa. The Keynote speaker for the occasion was Mr. Saman &#xD;
Ediriweera a celebrated alumni of the department. The e-Club of the &#xD;
department organizes this forum to showcase the talents of the students &#xD;

2011 to discuss in finding common grounds for collaboration. Prof, &#xD;
Fernando is Electronic and Telecommunication Department Alumni form &#xD;
1981. He explained the projects which are carried out at the THINKLab &#xD;
and how the futuristic visions are implemented at this facility. His &#xD;
main area of interest was using virtual reality and augmented reality to &#xD;
solve real world problems. During his busy schedule he took the time out &#xD;
to explain some of the operational details to the fourth year &#xD;

Sanath Panawennage, CEO and Director of Arthur C. Clarke Center for Modern Technologies. This year's completion required the students to build a robot capable of collecting items distributed in a grid environment and place them at the designated post. The main purpose of the DICB meeting is to exchange information with industry on the general trends of the sector, needs of the industry and Department's contribution in response. Approximately 30 distinguished personnel from the industry attended the meeting. Many academic staff members of the Department attended the event. Dr. Chulantha Kulasekere, the Head of the Department, Dr. Ajith Pasqual, Eng. Kithsiri Samarasinghe and Prod. This program will be focused on innovation using mobile technologies. TexMed is a product designed to be placed in medical clinics, helping patients of those clinics to reduce the time wastage in the process of seeing a doctor. National Institute Ireland visited the department on January 06,2011, to have discussions with the staff. He is an Optical devices expert who has had numerous publications and patents to his credit. within the Department premises. This year the competition has spread its &#xD;
wings to include teams from many local educational institutes such as &#xD;
the University of Ruhuna, UCSC and the SLIIT. This year the event was &#xD;
sponsored by Apoena Pvt. LTD a Telco Solutions provider. Many novel &#xD;
robot  designs were seen in the competition. This year the local &#xD;
finalists are  N.C.Illanarathne  and T.M.A.Tennakoon from the Department &#xD;
of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering. The finalists will be &#xD;
attending the grand finale in Bombay India on the&#xD;

by the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering &#xD;
together with the Omidya Institute and IEEE. The Chief Guest for the &#xD;
opening ceremony was Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Vice Chancellor of the &#xD;
University of Moratuwa. He went on to enlighten the multi national &#xD;
research audience of the benefits of the research and the relevance and &#xD;

analyze the carbon allotropes used in Nanotechnology.&#xD;

It can be used to visualize Carbon Nanotubes, Graphene/Nanoribbons and &#xD;
Fullerene and to plot the band structures of Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes.</description><pubDate>2010-09-01</pubDate></item><item><title>The Graduates from 04 Batch Donates a Stage for the ENTC1 - 28.08.2010</title><link>http://www.ent.mrt.ac.lk/web/news.php?id=295</link><description>The long time requirement of a stage for the ENTC1 was fulfilled today. &#xD;
The graduates from the 04 batch in a collective effort to upgrade the &#xD;
resources of the department presented the Head of Department with the &#xD;
completed wooden stage. As one graduate indicated "During our time, we &#xD;
too felt the need of a stage and we are glad we got to do something &#xD;
about it ...". It is indeed heartening to see these graduates act with &#xD;
responsibility and sensitive to the needs of others. This magnanimous &#xD;
gesture will be remembered by many batches to come. In a day and age &#xD;
where university graduates are branded as hooligans, these graduates are &#xD;
shining examples of the best that a University system can produce. As &#xD;
the current Head of Department said "This is why all of us come to the &#xD;
university everyday .. to produce well rounded graduates who are an &#xD;
asset to this country ...". The design of the stage was coordinated by &#xD;

presented the department with a fully refurbished conference room with &#xD;
40 new chairs and curtaining to match. This highlights the policies that &#xD;
the  University and the department adopts to foster an environment where &#xD;
technically brilliant and socially responsible engineers are created and &#xD;
put forth into the society. Head of Department, while accepting this &#xD;
generous donation from these exemplary graduates, highlighted the fact &#xD;
that the real beneficiaries of this magnanimous gesture would be the &#xD;

Telecommunication Engineering to develop a plan for the Vocational &#xD;
Education and Training (VET) plan for the telecommunication sector. Mr. &#xD;
BHS Suraweera, Deputy Director General and Mr. A Polwatta Act. Director &#xD;
(Planning and Research) attended from the TVEC. Prof.  SAD Dias, Eng. &#xD;
ATLK Samarasinge, Dr. KCB Wevegedera and the HOD represented the &#xD;
department. Both parties agreed that the consultancy would be carried &#xD;
